Arturo Prat Naval Academy

As a child, he was a cadet and eventually went on to graduate from the José Miguel Carrera National Institute.

Law and Administration

In 1986, he graduated as a lawyer from the University of Chile with a postgraduate degree in business administration from the Adolfo Ibañez University.

Entrepreneurial spirit

⦁He left his position as dean of the economic faculty of Diego Portales University to develop several entrepreneurship programs focused on those at social risk. In 2006, he founded the NGO Imagine Small Business Big Entrepreneurs (Imagina Pequeños Negocios Grandes Emprendedores).

Dreamer and adventurer

In 2007, he became the first Chilean, together with José Muñoz, to sail around the world and compete in the 2008 Global Ocean Race. Cubillos was also the first to cross “Cabo de Hornos” and received second place in the 2009 race. During his trip, he became truly inspired and started a blog where he jotted down his ideas and thoughts on his profound worldviews.

27/F changed his life

In 2010, his life changed radically after the 8.8 earthquake and tsunami that hit Chile. During this catastrophe, he decided to dedicate his work to the reconstruction of his country, founding Desafío Levantemos Chile and inviting his close friends to support this cause. It is through this organization which he embraces his ideology and values.

1962-2011

At age 49, a misfortunate accident took his life. Cubillos died in a plane crash, along with five other organization members and other compatriots, on his way to a mission in Juan Fernandez Island to help communities affected by the 2010 tsunami. Nevertheless, his legacy and commitment to Chile is still alive through Desafío.

The e-mail that started all

"Hello everyone: we have been in the coastal area of the epicenter of the earthquake for three days and the scenario is devastating. I would say that the tsunami produced far more damage than the earthquake (…) there is practically nothing standing in the villages located on the coast (...) I am impressed by the look on people’s faces, a mixture of disbelief, sadness, pride and hope, and they know, we know, that we’re going to get back on our feet and we’re going to do it together ( ...) As in any crisis, heroes always rise up, and, as often happens in real life, these heroes are usually people who do not seek fame or recognition, but just to help and do good. I’ve met a few of them these days".
